There are messages (starting with an 'M'), warnings (starting with a 'W') and errors (starting with an 'E'):
The meaning of these messages are detailed below:
E12214 Local is not available or the connection failed.'
Then the following checks should be made:
1. Is the address (or network name) and port number right?
To confirm this; on the Local, look at the title bar of the Remote Users Attached list, accessed by using the View Connected Users menu command from the Remotes menu. The address (or network name) and port number will be displayed in the title bar. Ensure this is what is being used by the Remote then click the Check button on the Remote to confirm it can reach the Local computer.
2. Is SpecView Local running and is it in Runtime Mode?
On the Local has Networking been enabled? Ensure that, on the Local, at least one of the checkboxes for Network and Modem have been checked on the Preferences Remote tab. This is accessed by using the Preferences menu command on the File menu.
3. Are there remote users setup (i.e. login names/passwords) and are there enough remote users setup?
4. Is the version of SpecView running on the Local the same as the version running on the Remote?
If this is the problem then the Event Window on the Local will show that there has been a connection failure with error code 20022.
If it still doesn't connect use Telnet to check the connection.
E12204 Logon failed for user <user> to SpecView PC <PC name>. Please check that the SpecView PC is up and running; also check your user name and password with the owner of SpecView PC <PC name> then retry.'
Click the Edit button to edit the connection and check that the Username and Password defined at the bottom of the box is correct.
They should be the same as listed on the Local in the User Setup box which is accessed from the Remotes menu,
E12223 This project is from a previous remote connection. Any changes made will be lost when re-connecting as a remote user.
When a SpecView Remote connection is made the whole project is copied from the Local across to the Remote.
The name of the copied project on the Remote uses the name of the connection which is appended to the name of the project from the Local computer .
For example, if the connection name is 'Production Line PC' and the project is called 'Batch Run' then the name of the copy of the project on the Remote will be: 'Batch_Run_Production_Line_PC'. This is to distinguish between identically named projects copied from different computers.
This project should not be edited on the Remote because any changes made will be lost when re-connecting as a remote user. This is because if meanwhile changes have been made on the Local then it will be copied over again the next time the Remote connects which will overwrite the changes made on the Remote.
Therefore, if this message is displayed there are 2 possible scenarios:
1. This is an intentional copy of the project which from now on will only ever be run as a Local on this computer.
In which case rename the folder so it won't get accidentally overwritten in future and delete the file called 'remote.use' (which is 0 size) in the folder, then this message will not be displayed.
2. This is not an intentional copy of the project.
In which case exit SpecView and run again clicking on the 'Remote' button at startup to run SpecView as a Remote.
E12212 There are 1 remotes still connected. If you still want to go into Edit Mode then press "Yes" and these remotes will be put into standby mode awaiting reconnection.
Standby mode is explained here.
If using Modems to make the connection
Then check the section on Modem troubleshooting.
